Handwoven Natural Straw Tote – Openwork Weave

Simple, honest materials, shaped by hand: this tote celebrates the natural color of the fiber and the skill it takes to weave pattern into structure.

It's roughly the size of a large reusable grocery (Aldi) bag, and its rectangular shape and flat base make it a practical everyday carry-all for groceries, a laptop sleeve and notebook, beach gear, or a bottle of wine for a friend. It also makes good open storage on a shelf. The body is woven entirely in warm natural straw tones, with rows of decorative openwork that let light through and add texture. Two tall, fiber-wrapped handles fit over the shoulder.

Its weave is in the tradition of northern Ghana's well-known basketry, where Bolga baskets are traditionally woven from elephant grass. This tote is handwoven in Ghana from natural straw.

Care: spot-clean with a lightly damp cloth and let air-dry away from direct sun. If it gets squashed in shipping, mist it lightly with water, reshape by hand, and let it dry naturally. Don't soak it, and keep dyed fibers away from light fabrics while damp.

Because it's made by hand, the openwork pattern, shape, and tone will vary slightly from piece to piece.
